Wine Culture of Guria

For centuries, wine has been an inseparable part of everyday life in Guria. Although the region produces far less wine than Kakheti, it preserves one of Georgia's richest collections of endemic grape varieties and a deeply rooted family winemaking tradition. Today, a new generation of passionate winemakers is bringing Gurian wine back to the spotlight. Small family wineries across the region are reviving forgotten grape varieties, restoring traditional qvevri winemaking methods, and producing exceptional natural wines that are increasingly recognized by wine enthusiasts around the world. Unlike large commercial wineries, visiting Guria offers a much more personal experience. Guests are welcomed into family cellars, meet the winemakers themselves, taste wines produced in limited quantities, and enjoy authentic Gurian cuisine prepared with local ingredients. Among Guria's most distinctive grape varieties are Chkhaveri, Sakmiela, Aladasturi, Jani, Mtevandidi, and Kamuri, each expressing the unique terroir and centuries-old viticultural heritage of the region.
